How to Choose the Right Hex Bolt Grade — 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9 Explained

Selecting the wrong bolt grade is one of the most common — and most dangerous — mistakes in industrial fastening. This guide explains exactly when to use Grade 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9 bolts.

Why Bolt Grade Matters

A bolt is not just a piece of threaded metal. It is an engineered component designed to provide a specific clamping force under a specific load. Use a Grade 4.6 bolt where a Grade 8.8 is specified, and the joint may fail — sometimes catastrophically, sometimes slowly through fatigue.

Conversely, specifying Grade 12.9 where Grade 8.8 suffices adds unnecessary cost and — because high-grade bolts are more brittle — may actually reduce safety in impact or vibration environments.

Understanding the Two-Number System

The metric bolt grade marking system is standardised by ISO 898-1 (and its Indian equivalent IS 1367). The two numbers in the grade tell you everything you need to know about the bolt's strength:

  • First number × 100 = Nominal tensile strength in MPa
  • Second number × 10 = Proof load as % of tensile strength

So Grade 8.8:

  • Tensile strength = 8 × 100 = 800 MPa minimum
  • Proof load = 800 × 0.8 = 640 MPa (80% of tensile)

And Grade 10.9:

  • Tensile strength = 10 × 100 = 1,040 MPa minimum
  • Proof load = 1,040 × 0.9 = 936 MPa (90% of tensile)

Grade 4.6 — The Mild Steel General Purpose Bolt

Tensile strength: 400 MPa | Proof load: 240 MPa | Hardness: 67–95 HRB

Grade 4.6 bolts are made from low or medium carbon steel with no heat treatment. They are the most economical option and are suitable for applications where loading is moderate and replacement is easy.

Use Grade 4.6 for:

  • General construction where loading is low and the structural calculation allows
  • Secondary connections in light steel structures
  • Non-structural fixings where failure consequence is low
  • Applications where re-use is frequent (soft threads are more forgiving)

Avoid Grade 4.6 for:

  • Structural steel-to-steel connections (IS 1367 requires 8.8 minimum)
  • Any application where the manufacturer specifies a higher grade
  • High-vibration environments (soft material loosens more easily)

Grade 8.8 — The Industry Workhorse

Tensile strength: 800 MPa | Proof load: 640 MPa | Hardness: 22–32 HRC

Grade 8.8 is the most common "high tensile" bolt in Indian engineering. It is quenched and tempered medium carbon or alloy steel. The "8.8" designation is so ubiquitous that many procurement teams simply say "HT bolt" and mean Grade 8.8.

Use Grade 8.8 for:

  • Structural steel connections (IS 1367 compliance for infrastructure)
  • Pre-engineered building (PEB) assembly
  • General machinery and equipment mounting
  • Vehicle and equipment chassis fastening
  • Most industrial applications not requiring higher grade

Important caution: Grade 8.8 bolts should not be hot-dip galvanised (HDG) by immersion above M36 without proper hydrogen embrittlement (HE) management — the acid pickling pre-treatment can introduce hydrogen into the high-strength steel, causing delayed brittle fracture.

Grade 10.9 — Very High Tensile

Tensile strength: 1,040 MPa | Proof load: 940 MPa | Hardness: 32–39 HRC

Grade 10.9 bolts are alloy steel (chromium, molybdenum, or boron additions), quenched and tempered to significantly higher strength than 8.8. They are the standard for HSFG (High Strength Friction Grip) structural connections in bridges and heavy structures, and for critical automotive applications.

Use Grade 10.9 for:

  • HSFG structural connections in bridges, heavy steel frames (IS 3757)
  • Automotive assembly — engine mounts, chassis, suspension
  • Tower and crane structural connections
  • Applications where bolt diameter must be minimised (high strength in small size)

Do NOT:

  • Over-tighten Grade 10.9 bolts — this grade is more notch-sensitive than 8.8. Controlled tightening (calibrated torque wrench, turn-of-nut method, or DTI washers) is mandatory.
  • Hot-dip galvanise Grade 10.9 by immersion without HE testing per ASTM F1624

Grade 12.9 — Ultra High Strength

Tensile strength: 1,220 MPa | Proof load: 1,100 MPa | Hardness: 39–44 HRC

Grade 12.9 is the highest standard metric bolt grade. Highly alloyed, deeply quenched, and tempered to peak hardness. This grade is specified only where the mechanical design demands the highest available bolt load in the smallest possible diameter.

Use Grade 12.9 for:

  • Automotive engine internals (cylinder head bolts often Grade 12.9+)
  • Precision machinery where bolt diameter is critical
  • Injection moulding tool assembly
  • Aerospace-adjacent mechanical applications

Critical warning: Grade 12.9 bolts are significantly more brittle than lower grades. They are susceptible to:

  • Hydrogen embrittlement from electroplating (use Dacromet or Xylan coating instead of zinc plating)
  • Stress corrosion cracking in certain environments
  • Sudden brittle fracture if over-torqued or surface-damaged

Never: Use Grade 12.9 in outdoor or corrosive environments. Use Grade 12.9 where surface damage (thread damage, notches) cannot be prevented.

The Golden Rule

Specify the minimum grade that satisfies the structural calculation with appropriate safety factor. Higher grade = higher cost, higher risk of brittle failure if misapplied, and often requires more careful installation. Grade 8.8 solves 80% of industrial fastening requirements. Go higher only when the design demands it.
